Pertti Vakkari is professor of information studies at the University of Tampere, Finland. He has been the chair person of the Finnish Doctoral Programme for Information and Communication Studies 1994-2002, and the chair person of the NordIS-Net 1998-2002.

He has been active in the Scandinavian information studies community working as an expert and consultant in designing and assessing research programs for information science. He has been involved in collaborative Scandinavian and European research projects, and has been a member in several program committees of conferences in information studies like CoLIS and ISIC. He is a member of the editorial board of the journals: "Information Processing & Management", "Archival Science", and "Journal of Documentation".

Prof. Vakkari's research activities may be broadly divided into 1) studies on information seeking, 2) studies on relations between task performance process and information search tactics and relevance assessments 3) studies on interactive information retrieval, and 4) theoretical and empirical analyses of information science. His publications include several monographs and readers and some100 articles and papers published in Finnish and international refereed forums.
