Mariam Ginman is professor and Head of Department of Information studies at Åbo Akademi University. She is also Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the university. Her research interests cover several aspects on Information Management and Information needs & uses both in professional settings and everyday life. During last years the focus has been on lay use of health information and how the information behaviour is moulded by social influences and collective behaviour.

She has authored some 70 academic publications including books and scientific articles. She has acted as project leader of research teams sponsored by the Academy of Finland and as a mentor of several Doctoral students both from her own Department and from other LIS Departments in the Nordic countries. At this moment she is a tutor of 8 PhD students and holds weekly research seminars for all 17 PhD candidates in the programme.

She has assessed candidates for professorships at several universities in the Nordic countries and been involved in evaluation of research programmes and research activities on national level both in Finland, Denmark and Norway. Additionally she has assessed research project applications for the Academy of Finland and the Nordic Council for Scientific Information (Nordinfo) and the Swedish Research Council.
