Birgitta Olander holds a Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from University of Toronto, Canada. Since 1994 she has been Head of the Department of Library and Information Science at Lund University, Sweden. She supervises two doctoral students. Her professional background (1971-1993) includes being a junior librarian at Uppsala University Library, senior librarian at Linkoping University Library, and deputy Director of Lund University Library, all in Sweden.

Her main research interest lies in the area of information behaviour, but also includes expert systems for cataloguing, hypermedia catalogues, library user services development, and recruitment strategies for libraries. She also has actively developed and tested new teaching and assessment methods for LIS education and promoted computer-assisted learning at Lund University.

She sits on the Editorial board of Ikoner, a professional journal for library issues, and of the LIS journal Swedish Library Research, and maintains a high profile in the Swedish library community.
